What the Heck is the Oracle Optimizer Doing?

Abstract

When Oracle optimizes your SQL, it transforms it and works out what it thinks is the best way to optimizer your statement to retrieve your data as quickly as possible. This presentation will look at what Oracle is doing, using the 10053 trace functionality to show why the optimizer is making it's decisions and how your configuration influences those decisions.

Speaker Biography

tl;dr Database Guy. Knows things. Neil has been working in IT since 1988, and with Oracle software since 1991 in both a Production Support and Development capacity. He is an independent consultant who specialises in Performance Tuning, RAC, DataGuard, and Goldengate, and also works with SQL Server, MariaDB and other databases. Neil is an Oracle ACE Director, and a board member of the UKOUG. He likes to drink strong smooth Italian coffee, good beer and better whisky, depending upon the time of day.
