Interpreting AWR Reports: Our Approach & a Few Examples

Toon Koppelaars, Oracle

Abstract

AWR reports can be daunting in the sense that they contain a vast amount of information. As a Real-World Performance engineer we diagnose performance issues using AWR reports almost on a daily basis. In this talk we'll discuss how we approach them: there are a couple of sections we always visit and study. And given what these sections tell us, we proceed to other sections. We'll demonstrate this approach by looking at a few example AWR reports. One needs to understand the concept of DB Time in order to understand AWR reports, so we'll start with a brief reminder of what DB Time is.

Speaker Biography

Toon has been part of the Oracle ecosystem since 1987. He is currently a member of Oracle's Real-World Performance team. The RWP team troubleshoots application performance issues in and around the DBMS. The way applications currently use (or rather, abuse) the DBMS, is often at the root of these performance issues. Prior to joining the RWP team, Toon has been mainly involved in database application development.
